Leading the Way in Sustainable Prefabrication: How Clark Pacific Recycles Concrete and Water 

Sustainability has always been at the core of Clark Pacific’s prefabrication and precast operations. At our manufacturing facilities in Woodland and Adelanto, innovation extends beyond the products we create. Every day, our teams work to reduce waste, conserve resources, and close the loop on how concrete is made and reused. 

Building Smarter, Not Wasteful 

Concrete production is water-intensive, and the material itself is a perishable product once water is added to the mix. In a traditional setup, leftover concrete and wash water often end up as waste. At Clark Pacific, we’ve built a closed-loop system that captures, treats, and reuses everything we can. The result keeps materials in circulation and out of the landfill. 

Here’s how it works. 

Step One: Collect and Separate 

When excess concrete or wash water leaves the production floor; it’s collected and sent through a specialized recycling system. Sand and rock are separated, and the fine materials are blended into a slurry, which is pumped into a filter press that separates the solids from liquid. 

Step Two: Treat and Reuse 

The filter system presses out clean, reusable water, which is stored in tanks and carefully treated to balance its PH. For context, concrete wash water has a high pH level, so it needs to be neutralized before reusing a close neutralized target pH of 8-9. Once adjusted, the water is held in holding tanks for future use. 

The remaining solids, now pressed into dry cakes, are reused as recycled base material for roads and other infrastructure projects, along with any waste concrete that has hardened  

Step Three: Zero Waste in Action 

At our Adelanto facility, the system works much the same way. Sand and rock are separated and reused; blended water (a mix of treated and fresh water) is cycled back into production, and the plant recycles 100% of its excess concrete and 100% of its processed water.

Water Reuse and Continuous Improvement 

 While both plants recycle nearly all of their wastewater, we have not yet incorporated reclaimed water into our concrete mixes. Concrete wash water naturally has a high pH, and although we neutralize it to safe levels, we are continuing to refine the chemistry to ensure its reuse does not affect the aesthetic quality or performance of our architectural precast products. 

In the meantime, we put this reclaimed water to productive use for batch plant cleaning, mixer truck washout, and dust suppression in accordance with our SWPPP (Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan) program. Our ongoing research is focused on expanding these reuse opportunities so we can confidently incorporate recycled water into concrete production without compromising quality. 

Setting the Standard for Sustainable Precast 

The systems we have developed at our Woodland and Adelanto facilities are more than plant upgrades. They represent a transformation in how prefabrication and precast manufacturing can operate sustainably at scale. Through a closed-loop approach, we capture, treat, and reuse materials such as aggregates and water, keeping resources in circulation and waste out of landfills.
